V-Day emergency, high school edition

My sister kinda sorta likes a guy, chickened out on making him a Valentine, then got to school and realized oh my gosh what if he got me something and I don't have anything for him!! She texted me and I was on it. (See? Cell phones at school can be a good thing.) This is being delivered to her during lunch just in case.

Card base is watercolor paper cut with Stampin' Up!'s Top Note die and a Sizzix Big Shot. Doily, ribbon, and heart glitter are craft supply. Used Zip Dry paper glue for the glitter as it doesn't wrinkle paper. Letters are by American Crafts.

Laurel Denise 2011 calendar

Feeling the need to get organized, I searched online and found this neat planner from Laurel Denise. So carefully thought out, and completely put together by hand. I love it.

I appreciate her attention to detail, down to the brown paper packaging, tied up with string. Available here.

Anthro store display

I was just in LA for the CHA trade show and while the men in our company went to a Lakers game, the women went shopping at The Grove. They saw Jack Nicholson, we saw a cool Anthropologie store display. Guess which one made for better pictures. (No offense to the talented and charismatic Mr. Nicholson.)

cookie time

Jack has the snack for "P" day tomorrow at preschool, and since I'll take any excuse to make cookies we made Pink, Purple, and (wait for it)... Plain.

I love these sugar cookies! They might or might not make angels weep with happiness. (It's the almond extract.) Mmmm!

TAMMY'S SUGAR COOKIES

½ c butter
½ c shortening
1 c powdered sugar
½ c baker’s sugar or regular sugar
2 eggs
½ tsp vanilla
1 tsp almond extract

Cream butter, shortening, and sugars together until smooth. Add eggs, vanilla, and almond extract, mix until just blended.

Mix together:
3 c flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt

Add to wet mixture and mix until smooth. Chill. Roll to about ¼” thick and cut out shapes, or roll into 1.5" balls and flatten slightly. Bake at 350º for 9 minutes (less time for smaller/thinner cookies).

P.S. They are not going to look done after 9 minutes, and you can bake them for a bit longer, but by the time they look done, they'll be too done. At least in my book.

photo envelopes

CD envelopes I made for my sister and her friends to hold pictures of a "friends" photo shoot we did. They're easy and fun to make:

1. Stamp a white label sticker with a background stamp using pink ink. Peel off and wrap around a vellum envelope, leaving about 3/4 on the front. (The back? Whatever.)
2. Add a letter sticker and glue a punched heart next to it. Cut a block of cardstock to go inside the envelope so you don't see the CD through the vellum. Done!

stamps! I make rubber stamps as a small home business and just started it up again after a bit of a break.

If you don't normally stamp, these are a little different than your traditional stamps. They're rubber, but instead of being mounted on wooden blocks, they're mounted on a special static-cling foam. So they cling to a clear acrylic block while you stamp, then you peel them off to store them on a panel when you're done. It's really neat, because they take up less space but you don't give up the clear, crisp image that you get from stamping with rubber.

So that's cling-mount stamps in a nutshell. You should give them a try, they're fun. Of course, I'm biased. ;)

miss ruby sue

Sometimes things are just meant to be. Lori Ward (the genius behind the gorgeous, over-the-top hairpieces at Miss Ruby Sue -- that's her in the picture) was referred to me by a mutual friend, and then we met each other in a totally different way around the same time. Turns out we live less than a mile apart! Anyway, we think we're a great creative match and I'm glad to call her a friend now.

So we've been working on some branding and packaging and new ideas for her line, and I just wanted to share a few of the things we've finished up.

embroidery pattern

Nothing ever turns out quite how you planned, does it? Which can end up being a good thing. I really like this talk by Joseph B. Wirthlin, and as a reminder to myself I made this phrase from it into an embroidery pattern. Download the pdf here -- I'm trying out a new file uploader, so let me know in the comments if you have any problems, hopefully it's a better system than the last.

little upside-down cake

Sanda Vuckovic Pagaimo has an incredible bakery in Portugal called Little Upside-Down Cake and a couple weeks ago I was lucky enough to have her contact me about making a logo. Here's what we came up with (I love the strawberry on top!):

I'm only sad I don't live nearby. Will you look at these brownies? Sanda, come to America.

She made a splash at a local food fair last weekend and I just had to share her business card idea -- instead of having cards printed, she hand-stamped her logo and info on recycled paper. Eco-friendly and a great look.

fabric flower favors

I made fabric flower hair clip favors for a bridal shower on Saturday, and was totally inspired to start making kits of them! post a tutorial! get a booth at our farmer's market!... but all that enthusiasm wore me out so I took a nap.

These are addicting; once you've made about 20 you'll feel like a pro. Here's how you do it:

1. Knot one end of a strip of fabric. A fat quarter is long enough, and these were about 1.5" to 2" wide.
2. Start wrapping around, twisting as you go.
3. When you're done, hot glue some felt on the back, and a clip. (I used bobby pins that I fastened through a slit snipped in the felt.)
4. Stamp something at the top of a block of cardstock, punch a hole in the middle and fasten the clips on for presentation.

(Can't find the video tutorial I originally used, although I did find these ribbon roses, which look awesome. Ah, here is a similar tutorial. I like the use of Glimmer Mist on muslin.)

$10 blog headers, plus new colors!

ALL the blog headers in my store are now $10. Because, well, why not? Cheap is good. I'm cheap (I mean, frugal) and I figured that's about the extent I'd pay for a header.

Also, you can now choose your fave fresh colors for most of them, so that opens up a world of possibilities, doesn't it? I chose shades I particularly love and that will work well together. Tell me the color (or colors, as the case may be) in your order notes and I'll whip it up and send it your way.

Sarah's bridal shower

My friend Sarah met this handsome dude and they got married last Friday. Not before we had a bridal shower for her, though. I was in charge of invitations, and here's what I made. As I look back at this, I really should have included the address... no wonder it was just me and her grandma there, eating sweet corn salsa. Well, live and learn.

Curvy die cut at the top is Sizzix for Stampin' Up!, and the butterfly punch is Martha Stewart. Flower stamp on the envelope is by Cactus Pink (don't think they're around anymore).

A lady in our stake who had seen the Women's Conference posters asked me to make a poster for their ward's Relief Society birthday dinner. (Well actually, my mom volunteered me! Haha, this happens when your mom knows everyone in town.) I finally stumbled on the idea of arranging the text in the shape of a cake, and it came together pretty quickly after that. Originally black & white, I like it much better in color.

(What is Relief Society? The organization for adult women in the LDS church for the past 168 years. We meet for an hour on Sundays for spiritual lessons and have occasional meetings during the week. Sometimes parties.)

Small & Simple Things

I have this cousin, Kindle, and she's pretty amazing. When I started this blog, I said something about not wanting me to do your hair -- well, she is the one you want to do your hair. And makeup. And redecorate your house. And then her husband Ben can draw up your dream home blueprints while you're at it. They're so great, I love them to death, and I just finished up work on their blog header.

Just a bit of backstory -- we went with a caning pattern because she reupholstered a couch with a similar pattern, only in black (you can see it in this post) and she thought that would be a neat element to include. A small detail, but it gives the header more meaning. I love little things like that. I had a lot of fun putting this one together -- thanks, Kindle!

Apparently my stamp store still exists... even though I ignored it for the better part of 2009. I updated it today -- some sets that were "sold out" weren't really! And looking at the tracking info on the backend (Big Cartel is so great that way) I realized that people were still visiting the store, which was both surprising and exciting. It has made me recommit to Green Grass Stamps (I had all but given up on it), and I'm going to put together a new sheet of stamps. It will take a couple of months to get everything going and paid for, but I love making stamps and I think it's an endeavor that's worth my time.

Women's Conference poster

A poster I did for the upcoming women's conference in our stake. The budget didn't allow for full-color printing, so they ended up being printed in black on pink paper with gray flourishes in the corner, which still looked quite nice. (But this, of course, is my favorite version.) The invitations are the same text arrangement, only without any decorative corners.

I was particularly psyched out of my mind (to borrow a favorite line from Elf) to see the business cards I designed for Susan Petersen, aka Freshly Picked, "in action" at the Altitude Design Summit. Susan had the awesomest way to pass out her cards -- in little vinyl holders she sewed her own self. She has some for sale in her store if you want one! Also in her store right now -- baby moccasins. I have some for both Fiona and Jack, and they are a dream.
